No. Karma does not work. It is a superstition, merely one particular manifestation of the Just World Fallacy. The Just World Fallacy is the erroneous belief that the world operates in accordance to human ideas of right and wrong, that everything is fair, that good things happen to good people, and that bad things happen to bad people. It’s a superstition, borne of a desperate, desperate desire to believe that the world is a place where things happen that are fair and right, for human perceptions of “fair” and “right.” The world is what it is. It is neither kind nor cruel, fair nor unfair. Sometimes, people who behave reprehensibly toward other people end up succeeding, or even being elected President of the United States. Sometimes, innocent and defenseless children who have never harmed anyone get cancer and die horrible, agonizing deaths.
